Sonoma students rock’n'roll

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 | Posted by | no responses

The talented bi-lingual 4th and 5th grade students of Flowery Elementary School were joined by teachers and parents last week as they performed their end of year rock concert.

On the play list were popular songs from Guns ‘n Roses, MGMT and Happy Birthday for a favorite teacher, all sung  in both English and Spanish. The concert was held at the Barking Dog Café in Sonoma.

Despite statewide and national budget cuts to music and arts education programs, Flowery Elementary School’s music program is flourishing. This is thanks to the program’s dedicated teachers Greg Campbell, Matt Pope and Krista McAtee as well as national nonprofit organization Little Kids Rock, which revitalizes and restores music education in underfunded public schools through the donation of musical instruments, curriculum and teacher training.

In addition to Flowery Elementary School, Little Kids Rock is at work in 56 Bay Area public schools and affects 2,672 local students. More information about Little Kids Rock is available at www.littlekidsrock.org.
