David Williams, known since age 9 as Lumpy and during the holiday season as Santa’s agent, died Tuesday in Marin County. He was 61.

The Sonoma Index-Tribune reports that Williams was found slumped over the wheel of his car on the shoulder of Highway 101 after suffering what was likely a cardiac arrest.

Duggan’s Mission Chapel in Sonoma is handling the arrangements and will make  details available once plans have been made.

Williams is best known for representing Santa in Sonoma over the past 45 years.

“They asked me because there had been a problem with a guy who enjoyed his Christmas cheer a little too much,” he told Towns correspondent Suzie Rodriguez in 2011. “I never drink Christmas cheer. At least not when I’m wearing my outfit.” Read the full story here.

Although Williams lived in Santa Rosa, he had been the primary caretaker for his ailing mother until her death in June. He is survived by a sister and a brother.

All I can say is RIP Lumpy.
    You will be missed.

This is sad, so sad. He was such a great guy. He spoke with my niece (long distance) 20 odd
years ago, and she was just thrilled. I think she still has the tape. Lumpy, you will live on in the memories of so many of us.

A sweet and gentle man, who brought joy to thousand of Sonoma citizens. There will be a “hole” in the middle of our community. God bless you “Lumpy”.
