City council appoints new city manager
Sonoma’s assistant city manager will soon take over for departing City Manager Linda Kelly.
The city council this week appointed Carol Giovanatto to succeed Kelly, effective Dec. 13.
Giovanatto has worked for the city for 11 years. In addition to her role as assistant city manager/administrative services director, Giovanatto also is the city treasurer and head of the finance department.
“The appointment of Carol will provide much-needed continuity during a time of transition. I have had an opportunity to work with her for eight years and I have full confidence in her ability to meet the fiscal challenges ahead,” said Mayor Joanne Sanders.
Giovanatto said the appointment “is the pinnacle of my 37-year career in local government and I value the confidence the council has shown in me. I look forward to working together to preserve Sonoma’s economic vitality while protecting its historic character.”
Earlier this year, Giovanatto was named the 2012 recipient of the Municipal Management Association of Northern California Women’s Summit Award for Career Excellence.
The award honored her many years of public service and leadership experience, including her role in contracting out of fire and emergency medical services with the Valley of the Moon Fire District.
Giovanatto’s appointment will be formalized at the Dec. 3 council meeting.
Kelly, the departing city manager, recently was appointed town manager of Windsor. She has served as Sonoma’s city manager since January of 2008.
