City building department urges chimney inspections

Monday, August 25th, 2014 | Posted by

Although there are no reports of significant structural damage from local police or fire officials following Sunday’s 6.0 magnitude earthquake, the City of Sonoma building department urges Sonoma Valley residents to check their masonry fireplace chimneys.

Certified chimney sweeps or masonry contractors can locate hard-to-see or hidden cracks that can cause problems in the future, including possible escape of heat, flames or toxic smoke into homes, according to City Development Services Director – Building Official Wayne Wirick Jr.

Chimneys that are leaning or that shifted during the earthquake also may cause water damage to homes during rainy weather.

Wirick recommends finding a contractor to perform a Level 2 Chimney Inspection or a Level 3, if needed.

If reconstruction is necessary, call the city building department at 938-3681 for information on obtaining a building permit.
